Directions: Read the following information to answer the question.

A cistern of capacity 40 litres has an inlet and an outlet pipe. When both the pipes are opened at once, it takes 8 minutes to fill the cistern. However, if the outflow rate is increased 1.5 times, the cistern never gets filled. Which of the following can be the outflow rate?

+

Initially, net flow in the tank = 40 litres/ 8 minutes = 5 litres/minute
Now, the increase in outflow should be greater than 5 litres/min for the tank to fill up.
Increase in outflow = 1.5x – x = 0.5x
Only in option C, 0.5 * 12 = 6 litres/min > 5 litres/min

Anuj, Bibhuti and Chandu can lay 432 m of wires together in 8 days. In a day, Chandu can lay as many more meters of wire than Bibhuti as Bibhuti can lay more than Anuj. Chandu’s 5 days of work is equivalent to Anuj’s 7 days of work. How many meters of wire can Anuj alone lay in a day?

Warning: Undefined array key 4 in /home/illumina/public_html/company/elitmusQ/index.php on line 544
+

Length of wire all 3 of them can lay in a day = 432/8 = 54 m
On an average, 54/3 = 18 m will be laid by each which as per question should be the length Bibhuti can lay in a day.
Therefore, Anuj = 18 – x ; Chandu = 18 + x
Given,
7 * (18 – x) = 5 * (18 + x)
126 – 7x = 90 + 5x
=> 36 = 12x
=> x = 3
Therefore, Anuj in a day = 18 – 3 = 15 m

Quants Question

Directions: Read the following information to answer the question.

A certain number of pages need to be typed. A, B and C are assigned to do this job. However, C leaves after 4 days when 40% of the job was complete. In this way, it takes 13 days to finish the job. Also, B can type twice as fast as A. How much would the fastest worker take to type the entire set of pages alone?

Warning: Undefined array key 4 in /home/illumina/public_html/company/elitmusQ/index.php on line 803
+

A and B take 9 days to complete the remaining 60% of the job.
Therefore, in one day A and B can complete – 60/9 = 20/3 of the job
Since B is twice as fast as A,
B can finish = 20/3* 2/3 = 40/9 of the job in a day
A can finish = 20/3 * 1/3 = 20/9 of the job in a day
In the first 4 days. A and B would have finished = 20/3 * 4 = 80/3 of the job
Therefore, C would have finished = 40 % - 80/3  = 40/3 of the job in 4 days
So, in a day C finishes = 40/12  of the job
Thus, clearly B is the fastest among the three workers

Quants Question

A mining team made a plan to mine up to 300 m in a certain number of days. After working as per plan for 5 days, they added new members to the team and hence could mine 5 m more per day. In this way, 4 days before the planned date, they had mined 295 m. How many meters of mining was initially planned for each day?

Warning: Undefined array key 4 in /home/illumina/public_html/company/elitmusQ/index.php on line 1063
+

Given, 295 m was mined out of which first 5 days – planned.
a) 30 * 5 + (30 + 5) * (300/30 – 5 – 4) = 150 + 35 * 1 = 185 ≠ 295
b) 12.5 * 5 + 17.5 * (300/12.5– 5 – 4) = 62.5 + 17.5 * 15 = 325 ≠ 295
c) 15 * 5 + 20 * (300/15– 5 – 4)1 = 75 + 20 * 11 = 295

Quants Question

Directions: Read the following information to answer the question.

Pipe A, B and C are kept open and together fill a tank in t minutes. Pipe A is kept open throughout, pipe B is kept open for the first 10 minutes and then closed. Two minutes after pipe B is closed, pipe C is opened and is kept open till the tank is full. Each pipe fills an equal share of the tank. Furthermore, it is known that if pipe A and B are kept open continuously, the tank would be filled completely in t minutes. How long will it take C alone to fill the tank ?

Warning: Undefined array key 4 in /home/illumina/public_html/company/elitmusQ/index.php on line 1322
+

A is kept open for all t minutes and fills one-third the tank. Or, A should be able to fill the entire tank in '3t' minutes.
A and B together can fill the tank completely in t minutes. A alone can fill it in 3t minutes.
A and B together can fill 1/t of the tank in a minute. A alone can fill 1/3t of the tank in a minute. So, in a minute, B can fill 1/t 1/3t = 2/3t

Or, B takes 3t/2 minutes to fill an entire tank.
To fill one-third the tank, B will take t/2 minutes. B is kept open for t - 10 minutes.
t/2 = t - 10, t = 20 minutes.
A takes 60 minutes to fill the entire tank, B takes 30 minutes to fill the entire tank. A is kept open for all 20 minutes. B is kept open for 10 minutes.
C, which is kept open for 8 minutes also fills one-third the tank. Or, C alone can fill the tank in 24 minutes.
