Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya, a Central University established by an Act 2009 of the Parliament, was originally established as State University by an Act of State Legislative Assembly of the then undivided Madhya Pradesh on 16 June 1983.GGV is an active member of the Association of Indian Universities and Association of Commonwealth University.

Vishwavidyalaya Research Entrance Test (VRET) is an yearly exam conducted for admissions to Ph.D at Guru Ghasidas University, Bilaspur. Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya Research Entrance Test (GGVRET) is conducted by Guru Ghasidas University, Bilaspur.
