SSC CGL 2020 Exam Pattern (Tier 1, 2, 3 & 4): Marking Scheme & Type of Questions
SSC CGL 2020 is conducted in 4 levels i.e Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 and Tier 4. There is a set syllabus for the entrance exam that candidates need to follow thoroughly. SSC CGL 2020 Tier-I has begun from March 3 and will be conducted till March 9, 2020. Tier-2 and Tier-3 will be conducted from June 22 to 25, 2020.
SSC CGL syllabus is different for all the tiers. Tier 1 & 2 are computer based papers with objective type questions. The major section of these two tiers are quantitative aptitude, reasoning ability, English comprehension, statics, and general studies.
Candidates must note that the score for SSC CGL Tier-I & Tier-II exam will be normalized if it is conducted in multiple shifts. The normalization score will be decided by SSC and it will be considered final for selecting candidates for the further rounds (Tier-III & Tier-IV) of  SSC CGL 2020. Tier IV is the final round for cracking the exam. No interviews will be conducted as notified from the year 2016. Candidates can prepare from important books mentioned in the article below.
Highlights of SSC CGL Exam Pattern
SSC CGL 2020 Exam Pattern is different for every exam. The marking scheme and syllabus differ from exam to exam.

  • Tier 1 exam- 100 questions from General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness/ General knowledge, Quantitative Aptitude, and English Comprehension. 60 minutes duration with negative marking for an incorrect response.
  • Tier 2 exam- This has 4 papers viz., Quantitative Ability, English Language and Comprehension, Statistics (only for the post of Statistical Investigator Gr. II & Compiler), General Studies of Finance and Economics (Only for the post of Assistant Audit Officer). 200 marks for each paper is allotted with a duration of 2 hours. Negative marking is applicable.
  • Tier 3 exam- Descriptive paper for Essay Writing, Letter/Application Writing, Passage Writing. The paper is conducted for a duration of 1 hour for 100 marks.
  • Tier 4 exam- Data Entry Skill Test/ Computer Proficiency Test for 15 minutes. This exam is qualifying in nature. No negative marking and no marks allotted.

SSC CGL 2019 have both online and offline based tests. While Tier 1, 2 and 4 are an online computer-based exam, Tier 3 is a descriptive written pen and paper examination. Questions in this section will be aimed at testing the candidates’ general awareness (GK+GS) of the environment around him and its application to society. SSC CGL 2020 Syllabus- Tier 3

Sections Syllabus
Written Descriptive English Test Tier-III of SSC CGL 2020 exam is a descriptive exam to test the written skills of the candidates in English/Hindi. The mode of examination is offline (Pen and Paper mode) and students are required to write essays, précis, application, letter etc. in this exam. The exam carries 100 marks and the time allotted for the same is 60 minutes. The time allotted for candidates belonging to PWD category is increased to 80 minutes. Tier-III paper is given by specific candidates who are interested only for the post of “Statistical Investigator Grade II” & “Compiler”.

SSC CGL 2020 Syllabus- Tier 4
SSC CGL Tier-IV Syllabus
Tier-IV examination comprises of couple of skill sets required for certain Government Posts all over the country.
DEST (Data Entry Speed Test): For the post of Tax Assistant (Central Excise and Income Tax),DEST Exam through SSC CGL 2020 exam is conducted to check the typing speed of the candidate. The candidates are given an article in English which they have to type on Computer. A candidate is required to type 2000 words in 15 minutes.
CPT (Computer Proficiency Test): Word Processing, Spread Sheets and Generation of slides are the three modules that are important for this exam and the commission demands a candidate to be proficient in it for the post of CSS, MEA, Inspector (Central Excise), Inspector (Preventive Officer), Inspector (Examiner).
Tier-I exam is compulsory for all posts mentioned in the SSC CGL 2020 Notification. Candidates will have to prepare for both Tier 2 and Tier 3 exam simultaneously. However, the evaluation of Tier 3 Descriptive exam will be done only if a candidate clears the combined cut off for Tier 1 and Tier 2. So, candidates may appear for both Tier 2 and Tier 3 exams but your Tier 3 answer sheets will be evaluated only if you clear the cut-off. Tier-IV exam is taken by candidates applying specifically for TA, CSS, MEA and Inspector.
Important Instructions for Candidates
Following instructions should be kept in mind while preparing for SSC CGL 2020:

  • Candidates should practice “mock tests” to get an idea of the computer-based exam for Tier 1 and Tier 2. Online tests for the same must be attempted.
  • Mock tests are available on the official website of the SSC as well as the regional office websites.
  • Time management is very important.
  • Be careful of negative marking. Answer only those questions which you are sure of.

Penalty for wrong answers
Giving a wrong answer to a question will lead to deduction of 0.5 marks in Tier – I, III and IV while that of 0.25 marks in Tier-II.

SSC CGL exam result for each Tier will be declared separately. Once the result for all the tiers is out, the authorities combine all the scores together to prepare a single SSC CGL merit list. Candidates who have successfully qualified and appeared for all the tiers of SSG CGL 2020 examination can check for the declaration of Final Merit List on the official website. This final merit list is prepared by taking the performance of candidates in all the Tiers of the SSC CGL examinations.
How to Check SSC CGL 2020 Merit List?
Step 1: Visit the official website
Step 2: Find and click on the ‘Marks of Candidates-CGL’ link.
Step 3: PDF file containing the roll number wise marks list will appear. This file can be downloaded.
Step 4: Candidates can check for their results according to their roll numbers.
Details Present on the Combined Merit List
Candidates can download the combined final merit list after 2-3 months of the examination. This list will contain the details such as the roll number of the candidate, name of the candidate and the rank and overall marks obtained by the candidate. The marks of candidates will be displayed, irrespective of whether they have cleared the requisite cut off.
Tie Break Criteria
If two are more candidates who have obtained the same overall combined score, the priority is given to the candidate who has scored more in the written test (Tier-III).

  • In case, the tie is still not resolved, the performance of candidates in Tier-II examination is taken into consideration and candidates have ranked accordingly in the merit list.
  • If the tie still persists, marks obtained in Tier I of the examination are taken into account and then the merit list is prepared accordingly.
  • If candidates have performed exactly the same in all the Tiers of SSG CGL 2020, the tie is resolved by comparing their birth dates. The older candidate gets the preference.
  • In case candidates are exactly of the same age, candidates will be ranked alphabetically.
