The ICAR-National Research Centre for Banana was established on August 21, 1993, in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, with the goal of increasing banana and plantain production and productivity through mission mode basic and strategic research approaches. Crop Improvement, Crop Production, Post Harvest Management, and Crop Protection are the four key thrust areas of research at the Centre. Tissue culture, biotechnology, soil science, nutrient management, physiology, biochemistry, entomology, nematology, fungal, bacterial, viral pathology, and post harvest technology research are all conducted in well-equipped laboratories.
